  9.      xwininfo - window information utility for X

  17. DESCRIPTION
  18.      Xwininfo is a utility for displaying information about  win-
  19.      dows.   Various  information is displayed depending on which
  20.      options are selected.  If no options are chosen,  -stats  is
  21.      assumed.

  23.      The user has the option of selecting the target window  with
  24.      the  mouse (by clicking any mouse button in the desired win-
  25.      dow) or by specifying its window id on the command line with
  26.      the  -id option.  Or instead of specifying the window by its
  27.      id number, the -name option may be  used  to  specify  which
  28.      window  is  desired  by name.  There is also a special -root
  29.      option to quickly obtain information on  the  screen's  root
  30.      window.

  32. OPTIONS
  33.      -help   Print out the `Usage:' command syntax summary.

  35.      -id id  This option allows the user to specify a target win-
  36.              dow  id  on  the  command line rather than using the
  37.              mouse to select the target  window.   This  is  very
  38.              useful  in debugging X applications where the target
  39.              window is not mapped to the screen or where the  use
  40.              of  the  mouse might be impossible or interfere with
  41.              the application.

  43.      -name name
  44.              This option allows the user to specify that the win-
  45.              dow  named  name is the target window on the command
  46.              line rather than using the mouse to select the  tar-
  47.              get window.

  49.      -root   This option specifies that X's root  window  is  the
  50.              target  window.   This is useful in situations where
  51.              the root window is completely obscured.

  53.      -int    This option specifies that all X window  ids  should
  54.              be  displayed  as integer values.  The default is to
  55.              display them as hexadecimal values.

  58.              This option causes the root,  parent,  and  children
  59.              windows'  ids and names of the selected window to be

  76.      -tree   This option is like -children but displays all chil-
  77.              dren recursively.

  79.      -stats  This option causes the display of various attributes
  80.              pertaining  to  the  location  and appearance of the
  81.              selected window.  Information displayed includes the
  82.              location  of  the  window, its width and height, its
  83.              depth, border width, class, colormap id if any,  map
  84.              state,  backing-store  hint,  and  location  of  the
  85.              corners.

  87.      -bits   This option causes the display of various attributes
  88.              pertaining to the selected window's raw bits and how
  89.              the selected window  is  to  be  stored.   Displayed
  90.              information includes the selected window's bit grav-
  91.              ity, window gravity,  backing-store  hint,  backing-
  92.              planes  value, backing pixel, and whether or not the
  93.              window has save-under set.

  95.      -events This option causes the selected window's event masks
  96.              to  be  displayed.   Both  the  event mask of events
  97.              wanted by some client and the event mask  of  events
  98.              not to propagate are displayed.

  100.      -size   This option  causes  the  selected  window's  sizing
  101.              hints   to   be  displayed.   Displayed  information
  102.              includes: for both the normal  size  hints  and  the
  103.              zoom  size hints, the user supplied location if any;
  104.              the program supplied location if any; the user  sup-
  105.              plied size if any; the program supplied size if any;
  106.              the minimum size if any; the maximum  size  if  any;
  107.              the  resize  increments  if any; and the minimum and
  108.              maximum aspect ratios if any.

  110.      -wm     This option  causes  the  selected  window's  window
  111.              manager   hints   to   be   displayed.   Information
  112.              displayed may include whether or not the application
  113.              accepts  input,  what the window's icon window # and
  114.              name is, where the window's icon should go, and what
  115.              the window's initial state should be.

  117.      -shape  This option causes the selected window's window  and
  118.              border shape extents to be displayed.

  120.      -frame  This option causes window manager frames to be  con-
  121.              sidered when manually selecting windows.

  123.      -metric This option causes all individual height, width, and
  124.              x  and y positions to be displayed in millimeters as
  125.              well as number of pixels, based on what  the  server
  126.

  141.              that are in +x+y form are not changed.

  144.              This option causes all individual height, width, and
  145.              x  and  y  positions  to be displayed in inches (and
  146.              feet, yards, and miles  if  necessary)  as  well  as
  147.              number  of  pixels. -metric and -english may both be
  148.              enabled at the same time.

  150.      -all    This option is a quick way to ask for  all  informa-
  151.              tion possible.

  154.              This option allows you to specify the server to con-
  155.              nect to; see X(1).

  207.      the  window's  border width and the behavior of the applica-
  208.      tion and the window manager.   As  a  result,  the  location
